Statement

My work in clay is a direct response to materials and surfaces in relation to natural landscapes.  I seek to express the attributes that I find compelling in dry and desolate places, which include color, contrast, texture and proportions of form.

With the use of both locally harvested and commercially available materials, I pay close attention to the behavior of specific clays and glazes to achieve results that convey a sense of authenticity.  In the making and firing of functional and sculptural pieces, the work becomes a tactile way of constructing and deconstructing landscapes, and seeing a highly accelerated glimpse of geologic process and scale.

My goal is to make works that resonate within these macro and micro moments in natural space and geologic time, while ultimately drawing a human connection towards expanding our definition, perception, observation and value of the natural landscape.
